If your home is a relatively new one, chances are good that you have window panes with at least two layers of glass. This technology, called (you guessed it) double-pane windows, can be tremendously important to reducing sound transfer in your home, but more importantly, can increase the energy efficiency of your home by leaps and bounds.
Double-pane windows typically have an air pocket between the panes of glass that includes a drying agent that prevents condensation. There may also be a special gas that adds a layer of insulation as well. If there’s a crack in the seal around the window, or the gasses inside the window have escaped, your windows may not be performing as well as they should. If this happens, unless you feel a draft coming from a specific part of the window, it can be very difficult to locate the source of the problem. One easy solution can be to have a home inspection that includes thermal imaging, that can make temperature changes in your window very easy to see.
