Surge protectors are another increasingly valuable device that helps to protect the electrical appliances in your home. Without warning, a sudden lightning storm, downed power line, faulty wiring, or even the activation of a high-voltage appliance can send a spike of electricity flowing toward your valuable electronics. Without protection, this can overload them and cause significant damage. Surge protectors, though, are designed to instantly detect this surge or spike in electricity and divert it harmlessly into the ground wire.

There are plenty of types of surge protectors. You might go with whole-home surge protection, which may require hiring a licensed electrician. Or, you can purchase a standalone surge protector to cover the significant electronics in your home. Or, you might go with a power strip with basic surge protection features. Or, you might want to use some combination of the above. Whatever the case, be sure to do some research. Certain surge protectors work better than others, and sometimes combining them can cancel each other out.
