For our second post in the “Cool Stuff in Your Home” series, we’d like you to go inside your bathroom, kitchen, or laundry room, and see if you can find the Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter. Sorry, that’s a long name. Let’s just call it a “GFCI” like most people do. If you don’t know what they look like, take a look at the photo attached to this post.
How did we know that there’s a GFCI in the rooms in your house that we mentioned? Because GFCIs are typically required to be installed on any outlet within 6 feet of a water source. That’s required because water is a leading cause of electrocution, and GFCIs are designed to prevent electrocution. They’re constantly monitoring the electrical flow to the power outlet, and immediately cut the power when the slightest imbalance is detected. That’s right, this little device can actually save your life. Why not give it a test every now and then to make sure it’s working properly?
